Folksonomy for Public Resource Directory (version 1.0)
How to Customize the Folksonomy
Folksonomy is a public resource directory tool that can be used to help find appropriate resources. Currently, a search will yield no results if it does not match an Agency or Program name, a taxonomy term or a use reference. Folksonomy can be used to “pick up” colloquial words or phrases in a search and relate them to taxonomy terms. In this way, the folksonomy search will return results assigned to these related taxonomy terms.

*Very Important Note* The Folksonomy terms or phrases you enter must not be found in any agency or program name, taxonomy term, or use reference. If you were to search a term or phrase that is found in one of these places, then those results will appear, not the folksonomy search results. For example, “food” is not an appropriate Folksonomy term as there are many taxonomy terms with this word in them.
Follow the steps below to add a Folksonomy entry:
- Click "Resources” in the left hand menu
- Click “Manage Resources” in the upper right hand side of the screen.
- Click “Customize the Folksonomy” at the bottom of the second column of options
- Click “Add a new Folksonomy entry”
- On the right hand side of the screen, enter the Folksonomy word or phrase
- Click the “Save” button
- To the right of the Folksonomy word or phrase, enter a taxonomy term to add and click the “Search” button.
- When the search results appear, click the box next to the taxonomy terms you want to assign to the Folksonomy entry to place a check mark there
- Click the “Assign Taxonomy Terms selected below to this Folksonomy entry” button
- Repeat steps 7 through 9 to add additional taxonomy terms

Note, you can go to the Statistics are of iCarol and run a report to see the common search terms the public is already using on your PRD. Then you can use this data to decide if you want to use any searches the public is currently conducting to create a Folksonomy entry. To find this data, complete the following steps:
- Click Statistics from your left side menu
- At the top of the page click the link to the Public Resources area
- From the Choose a report drop-down list, select 'Search Terms - Number of searches'
- Adjust your Results and Date Range filters
- The chart and Excel file will update as you select your filters; review the data in the chart, or download the Excel file and use the data to help create your Folksonomy entries
