Using the Rich Text URL Control
A rich text field is very versatile, enabling formatting highlights, color, bold, underline and hyperlinks. This can be useful in call reports or the Description field of resource records to control how the text displays and/or include hyperlinks for your users to click on that will trigger specific events.
In rich text enabled fields, the Link tool, which looks like a globe with a connected chain, will open a dialog that allows you to choose additional functions to occur when the hyperlink is clicked. Additionally, you can remove a hyperlink from your text by clicking on the globe with the broken chain.
Available Hyperlink Settings
There are three types of Hyperlink’s available within the iCarol rich text editor, “URL”, “Link to anchor in text”, and “E-mail”. Each of these URL types offer additional settings that allow you to customize how they work when triggered.
Hyperlink type URL
Links to a file, website, or other source either internally on your network, or externally on the internet when the hyperlink is clicked.
- Type in the text you would like the URL to display within the rich text editor. (eg. “Click here”, “www.icarol.com”, etc.)
- Highlight the text to use for the hyperlink, then click on the “Link” function from the tool bar.
- On the “Link Info” tab, choose the link type “URL”.
- Choose the URL Protocol for the hyperlink, there are multiple protocols available such as “http://”, “https://”, “ftp://”, however “http://” is most commonly used to link to websites.
- Type (or paste) in the URL/website address into the URL field.
- (Optional) Choose a “Target” (see below), or “Advanced” settings.
- Click “Ok” to save.
Target Options
Define a URL target, from the “Target” tab. This function controls how and where the linked content will display for the user. Options include:
- <not set> default, will open the window based on the clients browser settings.
- <frame>, will allow you to specify a Target Frame Name for use in iframes such as the Public Resource Directory (PRD)
- <popup window>, will allow you to create a popup window, to name it, and define its size, positioning on the screen, and other characteristics.
- New Window (_blank), will open the URL in a new window or tab.
- Topmost Window (_top), will open the link in the full body of the window, outside of any frames, such as the Public Resource Directory (PRD).
- Same Window (_self), will open the URL in the same frame or page that the link was clicked. If using the Public Resource Directory (PRD), the link will open within your agencies website, replacing the PRD window.
- Parent Window (_parent), will open the URL in the parent frame when frames are used, similar to Topmost Window (_top), but allows additional control over which frame to use.

Tip: “New Window (_blank)” is most common, and will keep both your iCarol page or Public Resource Directory, if used, open, while allowing your user to view the URL in a separate tab or window.
You can also use the “Advanced” tab for more granular control over Id, language direction, names, language codes, relationships, style-sheet classes and more.
Hyperlink type Link to anchor in the text
Allows you to create anchors within the rich text, to give your users an easy way to “jump” to content, useful for very long Resource descriptions. This feature requires basic knowledge of html. - Create the anchor tags within your text by clicking on the “Source” function, and placing the anchor tag “<a name=”name”></a>” where you would like the anchor URL to “jump” too. Tip: Replace “name”, with a name that makes sense for the content, such as “bottom”, “middle”, “Food Bank”, “Volunteering”, etc.
